BIOSPHERE RESERVE OF RIA LAGARTOS
LOCATION:
The northern coast of the state of Yucatan, Mexico. Includes the towns
of El Cuyo, Las Coloradas, Rio Lagartos, and San Felipe.
SIZE:
145,354 acres (60,347 ha)

HABITAT TYPE:
The Reserve includes 10 types of vegetation: coastal dune scrub, mangrove
and hardwood hummocks, flooded grasslands, low and medium deciduous
forest, low deciduous forest with cacti, low seasonally flooded
forest, medium subperennial and deciduous forest, as well as coastal
vegetation.
AVIAN IMPORTANCE:
Due to its geographic location, Ria Lagartos is a primary staging area for
Neotropical migrants during the spring, as well as a first landfall in
autumn. It is considered a wetland of international importance for
migratory birds by the Ramsar Convention and the most important area
for shorebirds in the state of Yucatan. The Reserve is best known
because 75% of the Yucatan Peninsula's Greater Flamingo population has
hatched in Ria Lagartos nesting areas. There have been 341 bird
species identified within the protected area.
BIRD ACTIVITIES:
The Reserve monitors four ecosystems biweekly: coastal dune, hummock
forest, medium subperennial forest and low deciduous forest with
cacti. Flamingo and shorebird surveys are conducted each month. The
Reserve also hosts local ecotourism guide training. The natural
history of the Yucatan Wren in the Reserve has also been researched.
